ATTACK ON GHQ BY ESTABLISHMENTS OWN :

ATTACK ON GHQ BY ESTABLISHMENTS OWN

Dr. Khurrum Shaukat Yusafzai.

The attack on Establishment on GHQ, was spearheaded by Mr Aqeel , Aliases Dr Usman someone who was serving as Nursing Assistant in AMC, Army Medical Corps in 2004.

He was member of Jaish Mohammed and the Lashkar Jahngavi both, the Groups, which operates from District Jhang near Faisalabad . The same places, which were once, head quarter of Sipah Sahaba . Now Jaish Mohammed and Lashkar Jahngavi are splinter groups of Sipah Sahaba .

Sipah Sahaba is mother of all, these Terror groups that now forms the Punjabi Taliban who are now part of Tehrik Taliban Pakistan (TTP) , forms more then 50%. Of TTP in FATA and the Southern Punjab . These Punjabi Taliban who were part of Sipah Sahaba an organization which specialized in Killing of Shias .

Interestingly while they were headquartered in Jhang district (Jahngavi comes from that Jhang District of Faisalabad), which also Houses Chenab Nager/ Rabwa the Home of Qadianis ( A Sect of People Claiming to Be Muslims but are not according to Pakistan laws promulgated by PPP and Zulfiqar Bhutto and its ;leader is given protection by UK government ) as well .

Sipah Sahaba is never known to hurt them Rather it Targets the Shia and thier Aims and objectives were to hurt their Interests while not touching the Ahmadis and action that throws light on what is really happening  Some People claim that killing Shias and Sunnis is a Diversion to allow Qadianis to flourish.

This seems to be the objectives of TTP as well, when the Qadianis of Shabqadar,( Home of Aftab Ahmad Sharpoa Ex-Interior Minister of Pakistan who ordered Military action on Red Mosque Islamabad)   , Achinai, and Nawai Kali Villages of Peshawar near Khyber Agency are never Persecuted by Taliban and they live among them peacefully.

Bannu the home of Bahadurs Kuli Khan and the Saifullahs ( PML-Q Parliamentarians) , where there are many Ahmadis in Bunnu and are never persecuted by Taliban too as well although it is just a Few Kilometers from Waziristan .

The Shias are massacred by the Taliban in Hango and DI Khan similar Objectives to Sipah Sahaba and it Derivatives the Lashkers Toibas and Jaishes Mohammed

While the Sipah Sahaba was created to Fight the Shias Politically as well Militarily , as Gen Zia wanted to Crush Pakistan Peoples party whose Power base was in Punjabi Feudals who were all Predominately Shia , and those of Sindh too .

Pakistan People Party had the honor to Promulgate the second Amendment of Pakistan constitution which Declared Qadianis as non Muslims and this made them Targets of such people in Establishment. As a result 5 people Father of Benezir Bhutto First Women PM of Pakistan and her Two Brothers of Benezir and herself were politically Assassinated.

The Shia Hating Sipah Sahaba was part of IJI , led by Nawaz Shareef and it won seats in Provincial Governments of Punjab. Even now in 2009 a sitting Senator of PML-N is a member of Previous Banned Sipah Sahaba.

The Sipah Sahaba would collect their recruits from Jammat Islami and JUI, Aqeel alias Dr Usman (God knows why he was given this name while he was just a nursing Assistant) has Previous connections with Jammat Islami too as alleged by MQM in the Parliament.

Although in the Army it is not allowed to have political Affiliations as per Discipline of Army, the Religious Parties is an exception as Zia Allowed many Private Sessions to be held in Army Officers homes and in private Soldier Barracks breaking the rules of Army and its Discipline.

He even Included a Column in Officers ACR (Annual Confidential Report and Dossier in GHQ, about Religious Interest and Fervor of Officers and Soldiers implying a Beards and attending Majlis with Such religious Parties members).

Many Power groups were made and Promotions in the Army were handed out Preferably to attendees of such Majlis. The Bearded officers although Looked Islamist from Superficially , but they were Internally they were Corrupt to boot . For Example some officers who were Born to Mud hut , Living Punjabi Farmers, are now Billionaires and own Transport Companies and Mega Business and Sugar Mills like for Example Gen Akhtar Abdul rehman Sons are now owning Dozens of Sugar Mills also involved in Current price hikes . Gen Hameed Gul own Varan Bus Service which provides Transport Busses to people  of Islamabad .

The In- Doctrination of This Aqeel Alias Dr Usman who attacked GHQ is Proof of this Phenomenon into such Militant Religious Organizations who are now banned to able to Infiltrate the Army even after they are banned by the Establishment .As he defected in 2004 or 2006 according to some, it shows that religious Indoctrination is continuing even now.

Many people have differing opinions about the Sipah Sahaba and its derivatives Lashkers and Jaishes, and its Objectives.  Some say they were created to Fight the Iran like after Islamic Revolution of Iran and Khomeini ’s rule. The US wanted the Influence of Iran to be contained. As it was afraid of Democratic Progressive Islamic Iran and after help of Iran to Hezbollah in Lebanon and Syria and Hamas in Gaza and Palestine made Iran Target of Israel and America .

As America wanted a Model of Sunni Docile Dictatorships to Israel , like current, one in Saudia and other Arab oil rich countries as favored Model for all the 56 Islamic Countries.

Gen Zia and other Military Dictators of Pakistan were extension of that Phenomenon too , as King Ship was a Bit too Much for here . By this methods Muslim could easily, be controlled by Brutal rules (Remember the Lashes and Persecution Gen of Zia) , all while America extended an open Hand to Gen Zia and the terrorists would be Invited by President Reagan and as President Zardari said Recently , That they would be called Freedom Fighters and George Washington’s of Asia. Photo sessions would be Initiated .

Sipah Sahba by the American Stooge Gen Mohammed Zia, who had massacred Palestinians in Black September in 1966 to prove his Loyalty to US and Israel , was a perfect solution to enslave the Most Important country of Muslims. The Nuclear Power of Pakistan and its Missiles as CIA had known was already obtained by Pakistan . China was there it had to be contained and India was not Pro- Any Super power and it was non – Aligned as per Nehru Doctrine.

The Tilt was provided by another Stooge , Gen Mushraff , he after Kargil Adventure made India to Fall in the Lap of America , as Pakistan was pushing India to limits with  its war with Half a Million Strong Indian Army in Kashmir contained. India was Breaking at its Seems . India needed a Shoulder USA was the Perfect choice as Russia was Pro- China .

The victory in Afghanistan against Russia had opened their eyes and then the Kashmir Campaign and encroachment on India what   America Feared would created the most Powerful Muslim Block on earth as a superpower this  Created fear that  Jihadis could reach Israel in no time.

The domestic Agenda of Killing Shia Political Leaders worked well for Zia to be kept in Power and reduced the PPP , power base in Punjab and Sindh. In That Vacuum Establishment raised the MQM too to sadly demise the PPP power in Sindh Urban Areas.

Pakistan was enslaved to such Barbaric Muslim fundamentalists who knew nothing of Real Islam. a Saudia Model was created from the  Progressive Iqbal,s   Pakistan . America Dream had come true and down fall of Pakistan started .

The Lashkar and Jaishes also were used after 1994 onwards while they joined Taliban in Afghanistan . They were used against the Iran in Afghanistan after the Failure of Taliban to Control Afghanistan 100% , After becoming part of Taliban and then were used to fight the Shia Dominated Northern Alliance led by Ahmed Shah Masood supported by Iran who almost defeated the Taliban who where collapsing because of Paucity of Funds in 1997-98. While Nawaz Shareef , was aidding Taliban through 60 Million Dollars per Year funds.

In that Period from 1994-98 , many Killing of Shia and Sunni ,s  were done in  tit for Tat manner in Pakistan . when Mosques and Places of Worship were bombed during the decade of 90,s to Year 2000. For the first time Suicide bombing phenomenon was seen in Pakistan in province of Sindh and Punjab and that too when America was not here in Afghanistan and 9/11 had not happened. Many Innocent Pakistanis Lost their lives .

Our establishment of fought a proxy war with a Muslim Country Iran while we publicly claiming it to be our friend used these groups to Fight it .   Nevertheless, in Actuality we are fighting it on behest of America and Israel .  The Recent Jandolla Groups in Waziristan and Balauchistan is an extension of this and our close association with USA.

We created the Taliban in 1994 to Fight Iran and kept its influence out of Afghanistan for the Americans.  The Northern Alliance was fought with our Money our Weapons and help of our Intelligence agencies. If Mujahideen were left alone America would never would have been able to come to Afghanistan . That was the reason Ahmed shah Massod was killed right in the day 9/11 occurred.

The Iran therefore, looked at Pakistan with suspicion but their superior Intellect Kept the relations cool.

Recently the same policies seem to be continuing even now when; Jandolla group bombed typically Mosques in Sistan province of Iran right next to Balauchistan. This group is formed from same Sipah Sahba / Lashkar and Jaishes Derivatives.

This group was run by Al-Qaeda itself and by Osama Bin Laden right upto 9/11 , as according to recent revelations by  Former FBI translator Sibel Edmonds dropped a bombshell on the Mike Malloy radio show, guest-hosted by Brad Friedman in America that Osama worked for US interest towards Iran and china from Pakistan and Afghanistan right upto 9/11. This policy is continuing even now .

President Ahmadinejad last month in September 2009, while addressing United Nations himself warned US and CIA of not using the Baluchsitan and FATA against Iran . The Pakistani Media kept mum on it.

In Fact the Pakistani Ambassador was snubbed  and called to foreign office of  Iran in Iran , when Mosque bombing Happened just before famous Iranian elections in 2009.

The Crux of the Matter is that , Our Madrasshas and our Islamic Guerilla Fighters were handed over to Mossad and CIA and to , thier Plans against Iran and China which has made Pakistan as the Most dangerous Place to Live .

The use of such groups to destabilize Pakistan and our True friend like Iran and China and  their help by Establishment is mind boggling, why we have these Terrorist religious Parties working for American Interests Killing Ordinary Pakistani and attacking the GHQ.

Maybe the Objective of these groups to Eliminate Pan Islamism and cause Shia and Sunni Sect Divided and hate and to Separate the two biggest Sects of Islam. This formoula was working in Iraq too .

The Divide and rule Policy of America is continuing , just Like the Divide and rule policy of British East India Company .

Why cannot we eliminate and punish leaders of these Terror groups may be the USA and CIA is behind this, and some operates as Black sheep groups in the Pakistani Establishment . Who do not want Pan Islamism?. They want to create an Impression that Pakistan as a failed state .  Their service to America is more important to them then the countries they are born in and feed in.

The Destruction of Judiciary and Democracy is done by the same Black faces and they want to subdue the ,Muslims to what is Saudia Arabia , and other gulf countries where women are banned to drive cars and to Vote and be treated like Farm Animals and traded in Multiple Wives and Marriages like cattle .

The same people killed the first Women Leader of Democratic Muslim country. While in their Masters country America after two centuries of existence not a single woman is elected as Head of State in America .

IT is true as Army and ISPR , said in Muffled Word without naming America , Israel , and India definitely externally and some Black sheep internally in our Establishment are involved in attacking the Most Prestigious GHQ, the pride of Pakistan . I salute the Martyrs of GHQ and the special services group to conduct a successful operation that saved our Faces and Honor too selflessly and without question.

Deception, Spin And Lies

Deception, Spin And Lies
By Gilad Atzmon

“By way of deception thou shalt do war” -The Mossad motto
Less than a week after Ankaracancelled an air exercise with Israel, Turkey’s state-sponsored channel TRT1 broadcast “Ayrilik” (“Farewell”), a new prime-time TV show that depicts the true image of Israel’s genocidal military operation in Gaza last January.
The Israelis are not happy. “Broadcasting this series is a serious case of state-sponsored incitement. ,” said Israel’s Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman this morning. “Such a series, which doesn’t even have a weak connection to reality presents the IDF’s soldiers as murderers of innocent children.” I wonder whether one should remind hardliner Lieberman, who happens to be an enthusiastic ethnic cleanser and a proud Judeo supremacist racist, that the reality on the ground last January was ‘connected enough’ to establish a genocidal war crime inquiry and a crime against humanity. It left over 1400 fatal casualties. It also left thousands more injured, most of them children, women and elders. However, for once Lieberman happens to read the map. The Turkish TV-show indeed depicts the IDF’s soldiers as murderers of children women and elders for this is what Israeli soldiers are and this is exactly what Israel stands for politically, symbolically, ideologically and practically.
Though Lieberman tries to appease his Israeli crowd and may even be successful in doing so, his chances to mount pressure on Turkish TV and the government are rather limited. By now we all happen to know Israel is all about the establishment of a ‘Jew-only state’ in a stolen land named Palestine.
As it happens we tend to spend a lot of time writing and analysing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. But the facts on the ground are actually very simple. Zionism is an ideology aspired by the plunder of Palestine. Israel has put the robbery of Palestine and the Palestinians into practice. We are talking here about a national revival project that is taking place at the expense of another people. It is a murderous project inherently inspired by the bible and an unethical plundering project of ‘home coming’. It is a lethal combination of some deadly interpretations of the Old Testament together with a non-ethical present. The only question to be asked is how have they got away with it? How do they continue to get away with plunder, murder, spreading white phosphorus and piling up nuclear weapons?
Spin, Deception and Lies are the Answer
A few weeks ago, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu stood in front of the UN waving the Wannsee Conference’s protocols suggesting that he was holding the ‘proof for the Nazi extermination of European Jewry’. With typical histrionics, he pleaded for the nations empathy. “Is this a lie?” he cried out. Embarrassingly enough, though the document he presented to the assembly was genuine, he was actually spinning the usual Zionist lines.
TheWannsee protocol refers in a rather general manner, to the deportation to the East of the entire Jewish population from Germany and German occupied territories. Though the document refers to ‘Final Solution’, the very ‘solution’ it prescribed is rather different from the common interpretation offered by the ZionistShoa narrative. The Wannsee protocol refers basically to a sinister plan to exhaust the deported Jews in hard labour in roadwork.
As much as Wannsee document is devastating, its relevance to the history of the holocaust is rather limited for the ‘Wannsee plan’ has never materialised into an actual operative program. It has actually nothing to do with the historicity of Jewish extermination known as the Shoa. It doesn’t set any plan for death camps or gas chambers whatsoever. As a legal document, it proves nothing but general Nazi inclinations.
As a historic document it by no means ‘proves’ the Shoa and the extermination of the Jews, it just affirms that the Nazi regime was committed to the idea of Judenreine (Jews Free). However, this fact is well established and widely accepted even by most if not all holocaust revisionists. As much as Netanyahu insisted to boost the Holocaust with some fresh credibility, he ended up waving a relatively insignificant paper in front of the nations. Needless to say, he got away with it.
However, far more crucial is the fact that the Wannsee Protocol lines out a program that is not that different from Lieberman’s deadly plan for the Palestinians. In reality it is the Jewish state that murders Palestinians en masse and starves those who survive. Moreover, it is very interesting also to elaborate on the following questions: how is it that the leader of the Jewish state is standing in front of the nation and spins in broad daylight in the name of Israel and the name of the Jewish people? What can we learn from the fact that an Israeli leader tries to fool the entire UN assembly? How is it that as Israeli PM manages to divert the attention so easily from his own crimes against humanity that are taking place in the present into a relatively insignificant historical document? In short, how does he get away with it?
The answer may be pretty trivial. Like in the case of the Mossad motto, they make their wars by deception. The entire Jewish revival project is grounded on sets of lies. The entire tale of Jewish ‘home coming’ is nothing less than a daylight collective crime based on false argument and lies again. Initially Zionists were deceiving their fellow Jews but as time passed by they have been extending their tactics.
For more than a while they have been spinning us all. The Israelis and Zionists are born into a lie, they live their life through a lie, they tend to believe that they can get away with lies and deception and the sad truth must be said. As far as world leaders are concerned, they actually do. As we know, not a single world leader challenged Netanyahu’s spin at the UN. More disturbing is the fact that not a single historian or intellectual tried to point out to the Israeli PM that more than anything else, the Wannsee Protocol actually describes his own policies at home.
Very few World Leaders have the guts to oppose the Zionist spin operation. Recently we have witnessed the courageous Iranian Mahmud Ahmadinejad, Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez and Turkish PM Tayyip Erdogan. This is not a lot considering the level of colossal atrocities committed by the Jewish state. However, it is better than nothing.
The good news is that Humanism and Humanity is not exactly in the possession of politicians or so called ‘world leaders’. It is actually our property, the members of the human race, the people out there who happen to witness the emerging evil. True Humanity and Humanism is delivered by kindness and an aspiration for ethics and truthfulness. In most cases it is actually artists and ordinary people who transform Humanism into a vivid message. Our elected interventionalists, for some reason insist on dragging us all into more and more Zionist wars in the name of the holocaust, democracy and liberation’.
Tragically enough, our Western leaders are still silenced or at least ‘captivated’ by Zionist lies. But this shouldn’t be a major concern anymore. The betrayal of Western ideologies (left, right and centre), politicians and institutions are an established fact. Succumbing to Zionist lies is apparently just one symptom amongst too many. Not only that truth will win, it is actually winning already. The identification of the Zionist spin is becoming common knowledge. As the foggy cloud of the Zionist brutality expands we all develop a growing yearning for some beams of truth and grace. We are beginning to grasp that they make their wars by the means of deception. They may win a few more pyrrhic battles but they are losing the war.

UNHRC Endorses Goldstone Report, Causes Israeli Anger

UNHRC Endorses Goldstone Report, Causes Israeli Anger

Readers Number : 160

16/10/2009 The Zionist entity slammed as “unjust” the adoption of a UN report on the Israeli war crimes committed at the Gaza war on Friday, warning that it damages Middle East peace efforts and encourages “terrorist organizations” around the world.

“The adoption of this resolution by the UNHRC impairs both the effort to protect human rights in accordance with international law, and the effort to promote peace in the Middle East,” the Israeli foreign ministry claimed in a statement. “This resolution provides encouragement for terrorist organizations worldwide and undermines global peace,” it said.

Israeli Interior Minister Eli Yishai called the report an anti-Israeli “diplomatic farce,” insisting Israeli forces “acted with silk gloves” toward civilians during the Gaza offensive.

The Palestinians, on the other hand welcomed the resolution, with Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat hoping it would be “followed up in the UN Security Council to ensure such Israeli crimes are not repeated.”

In Gaza City, Hamas also approved the move, with spokesman Taher al-Nunu saying the Resistance movement hoped the vote “will lead to a trial of the occupation leaders.”

Hamas political number two Mussa Abu Marzuk stressed in an interview with Al-Jazeera television that the Goldstone report “exonerated Hamas from using human shields.”

Earlier, the UN Human Rights Council on Friday adopted a resolution that endorses Goldstone report accusing Israel of war crimes during the Gaza conflict. With 25 states of the council voting for the resolution, six voting against and 11 abstaining, the “draft resolution … is therefore adopted,” said president of the Human Rights Council Alex Van Meeuwen.
The UNHRC chief has earlier endorsed the Goldstone report, and called for “impartial, independent, prompt and effective investigations” into the “war crimes.” Navi Pillay said Israeli and Palestinian leaders should investigate the reported allegations to help “rebuild trust and support peace in the region.”

She said all sides of the Middle East conflict were continuing to violate international human rights and humanitarian law, and raised concern that transgressors remain unpunished. “A culture of impunity continues to prevail in the occupied territories and in Israel,” Pillay said during the UN Human Rights Council’s special debate session on the Goldstone report on Thursday.

The Geneva debate comes a day after the UN Security Council discussed the report, during which the Palestinian Authority demanded that Israel be punished for war crimes. In the report released last month, investigators led by South African jurist Richard Goldstone accused both Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas of war crimes in Gaza, but were overall more critical of Israel than Hamas.

The Palestinian Authority had initially agreed to defer a vote on the UN-sanctioned report but later backtracked under heavy criticism.

The Palestinians in a draft resolution circulated for the human rights council debate, called on Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary general, to monitor whether Israel and Hamas conduct credible investigations.
It “strongly condemns all policies and measures taken by Israel, the occupying power, including those limiting access of Palestinians to their properties and holy sites” and calls on Israel to stop digging and excavation work around the Al-Aqsa mosque as well as other Islamic and Christian religious sites.

In her speech, Pillay cited concern about the restrictions on Palestinians wishing to enter Al-Aqsa and expressed “dismay” about the Israeli blockade of Gaza that she said “severely undermines the rights and welfare of the population there”.

Israel rejected the charges saying the resolution – drafted by the Palestinians with Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan and Tunisia, on behalf of non-aligned, African, Islamic and Arab nations – threatened “peace efforts”.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who spent much of the past few days on the matter, failed to convince “his colleagues”, mostly in Europe, to oppose the adoption of the report. Netanyahu held a series of meetings to assess the Goldstone Report and also had intensive telephone conversations with senior figures in Europe in an effort to block the report. He said on Thursday that his country would not be able to take “risks for peace” if it could not defend itself from attacks on its “citizens”. “It’s important for the principle countries, outside of this automatic majority of the United Nations, to say we are not taking part in this.”We know we should act otherwise,” he said.

Aharon Leshno Yaar, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, said the adoption by the council of the proposed resolution would be a “reward for terror and will send a clear message to terrorists everywhere”. “They will clearly hear that this new form of warfare, as used by Hamas in Gaza, will offer immunity as countries will be prevented from waging effective responses.”This strategy will be repeated in other places, against other countries fighting terror.”

The Goldstone report recommended that its conclusions be sent on to the International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor in The Hague if Israel and Hamas do not hold their own credible investigations into allegations of war crimes within six months.

Pakistan calls for Israeli pullout from Arab lands

Pakistan calls for Israeli pullout from Arab lands

* Hussain Haroon says world’s failure to respond will be disastrous for region, globe

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan on Wednesday called for addressing the root cause of the Middle East conflict – the Israeli occupation of the Arab territories – to accomplish a lasting settlement of the decades-old problem.

Speaking in a UN Security Council debate on the situation in the Middle East, Abdullah Hussain Haroon, the Pakistani permanent representative, said the solution required Israel’s complete withdrawal from the occupied Palestinian territory, including east Jerusalem, and all other occupied Arab territories, including the Syrian Golan. Israel should also immediately cease all settlement activities, Haroon added.

The Pakistani envoy commended as “magnificent” the UN report, which concluded that Israel committed actions amounting to war crimes, possibly crimes against humanity, during its devastating attacks on Gaza in late December and January. He said the report, written by respected South African Judge Richard Goldstone, “deserves to be read in complete understanding and without reservation because it speaks in a very strong and truthful voice”.

Dealing with the Middle East situation, Ambassador Haroon said the international community was confronted with a situation that continued to fester. The consequences of the collective failure to respond would be disastrous for the region and beyond.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza and the West Bank was worsening, he said. Closure of Gaza’s border to people and commerce was strangling the local economy and public services and was a threat to human security.

“Amidst this human tragedy, we regret to note that (the) Israeli government carries out actions that compound the plight of Palestinian people and make a political settlement all the more difficult”.

The ambassador said the council, especially the body’s five permanent members, should show the political will to achieve real progress or peace in the Middle East and urge re-launching negotiations for a two-state solution.

He said the framework for peace had already been laid out in council resolutions, the Annapolis understanding, the Arab Peace Initiative and the Road Map peace plan. The Quartet – comprising the United Nations, the European Union, the United States and Russia – must support the peace process through a transparent and objective engagement, Haroon said. There was an urgency to address the humanitarian plight in the occupied Palestinian territory and rebuild Palestinian institutions. Intra-Palestinian reconciliation was also a prerequisite for peace, he said. About 50 delegations took part in the day-long debate during which Arab and Israeli envoys clashed over the findings of the Goldstone report.

Arab delegations showed up in force to support the Palestinian Authority, intending to make political gains from the report that Israel and the United States want the UN to bury. The UN Human Rights Council will debate it in Geneva on Thursday. app

Covert Operations: The Human Factor

Covert Operations The Human Factor

Covert Operations: The Human Factor
by: Hunter, Jane
August – August  1992
The Link - Volume 25, Issue 3

Our great grandchildren’s history books will probably list the 1982 invasion of Lebanon, the Jonathan Jay Pollard espionage affair, the Middle East peace talks and Washington’s refusal to grant Israel $10 billion worth of loan guarantees as major milestones in U.S.-Israeli relations during the Reagan and Bush administrations. Most likely forgotten, or consigned to the realm of “conspiracy theory,” will be the history of secret policies, covert operations, arms sales and cover-ups that appeared to the public as transitory scandals but, for the men at the top in both countries, may well have been the compelling dynamic of the relationship.

In foreign policy, what we saw—and thought we were voting for—was seldom what we got. Washington professed neutrality in the Iran-Iraq war while it cynically armed both sides, contributing to the war’s toll of one million casualties. Israel justified the billions of dollars of U.S. aid it received annually by portraying itself as a strategic asset in the struggle against the Soviet Union—and then it passed the U.S.S.R. sensitive U.S. intelligence!

In the face of scandals that would have brought any normal government down, the U.S. and Israeli governments resorted to deniability (an intelligence term for passing the buck) and they withheld incriminating documents on the grounds of “national security.” There is a striking resonance between this arrogant disregard for their electorates and the disregard for peoples’ needs that saw hunger, ill health and joblessness increase in both Israel and the U.S.

The covert dimension that so absorbed the Reagan and Bush administrations and the Israeli governments of the past decade had its roots in a longstanding arrangement between Israel’s intelligence agency Mossad and the CIA. The two agencies began working together in the 1950s, and during the 1960s the CIA gave Mossad $10-20 million a year to help it out in the Third World.1 But during the Reagan years, the partnership was moved upstairs to the White House and the State Department and given both a new name, “strategic cooperation,” and official status under a series of agreements.2

After 1982, recalled David Kimche, who, as director of the Israeli foreign ministry, was Israel’s point man for strategic cooperation, the two governments “maintained, I must say, a very, very intimate dialogue on various parts of the world. We used to discuss what one should do in Third World countries, in the Middle East, et, cetera…”3

When it was discussed at all in public, the arrangement was always presented as Israel’s contribution to the Reagan administration’s crusade against communism, especially where Congress had forbidden official U.S. involvement (such as Nicaragua and Angola).4 But it was much more than that. Often, in fact, the covert partnership seemed more like a covert free-for-all, with the erstwhile partners indulging in contradictory sets of operations that seemed to be at odds with their own and each others’ interests.   (click link in title to read full article)

Colombian Guerrillas Help Scientists Locate Literacy In The Brain

Colombian Guerrillas Help Scientists Locate Literacy

In The Brain

ScienceDaily (Oct. 15, 2009) — A unique study of former guerrillas in Colombia has helped scientists redefine their understanding of the key regions of the brain involved in literacy. The study, funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science, has enabled the researchers to see how brain structure changed after learning to read.

Language is a uniquely human ability that evolved at some point in the six million years since humans and chimpanzees diverged. Even without being taught or having adults to copy, children develop sophisticated language systems. In contrast, reading is a learnt skill that does not develop without intensive tuition and practice.

Understanding how our brain structures change as we learn to read has proved difficult as the majority of people learn to read when they are children, at the same time as learning many other skills. Separating the changes caused by reading from those caused by, for example, learning social skills or how to play football, is almost impossible. Studying adult learners is also challenging because in most educated societies adult illiteracy is typically the result of learning impairments or poor health.

In today’s edition of Nature, researchers from the UK, Spain and Colombia describe a study working with an unusual cohort: former guerrillas in Colombia who are re-integrating into mainstream society and learning to read for the first time as adults.

“Separating out changes in our brains caused by learning to read has so far proven almost impossible because of other confounding factors,” explains Professor Cathy Price, a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow at UCL (University College London). “Working with the former Colombia guerrillas has provided a unique opportunity to see how the brain develops when reading skills are acquired.”

The researchers examined magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the brains of twenty guerrillas who had completed a literacy programme in their native tongue (Spanish) in adulthood. They compared these to scans of twenty-two similar adults prior to commencing the same literacy programme. The results revealed which brain areas are special for reading, prompting new research in the UK on how these regions are connected in adults who learn to read in childhood.

The researchers found that for those participants who had learnt to read, the density of grey matter (where the ‘processing’ is done) was higher in several areas of the left hemisphere of the brain. As might be expected, these were the areas that are responsible for recognising letter shapes and translating the letters into speech sounds and their meanings. Reading also increased the strength of the ‘white matter’ connections between the different processing regions.

Particularly important were the connections to and from an area of the brain known as the angular gyrus. Scientists have known for over 150 years that this brain region is important for reading, but the new research has shown that its role had been misunderstood.

Previously, it was thought that the angular gyrus recognised the shapes of words prior to finding their sounds and meanings. In fact, the researchers showed that the angular gyrus is not directly involved in translating visual words into their sounds and meanings. Instead, it supports this process by providing predictions of what the brain is expecting to see.

“The traditional view has been that the angular gyrus acts as a ‘dictionary’ that translates the letters of a word into a meaning.” explains Professor Price. “In fact, we have shown that its role is more in anticipating what our eye will see – more akin to the predictive texting function on a mobile phone.”

The findings are likely to prove useful for researchers trying to understand the causes of the reading disorder dyslexia. Studies of dyslexics have shown regions of reduced grey and white matter in regions that grow after learning to read. The new study suggests that some of the differences seen in dyslexia may be a consequence of reading difficulties rather than a cause.

Next nuclear worry for US: Kazakhstan?

Next nuclear worry for US: Kazakhstan?

Kazakhstan is second only to Australia in reserves of uranium.

By Peter Grier | Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor

Washington – Does Kazakhstan want to increase its nuclear commerce – doing deals with other nations that have mixed records when it comes to weapons proliferation? That is a sensitive issue which US intelligence appears to be following closely.

Since it gained independence following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Kazakhstan has cooperated with the US on key denuclearization activities. Nuclear weapons stationed on Kazakh territory were returned to Russia and their delivery systems destroyed.

But Kazakhstan is second only to Australia in reserves of uranium. It has cut a number of nuclear material deals with Russia, China, and other nations.

“Seemingly contrary to its promotion of a peaceful, nuclear weapon-free Central Asia, Kazakhstan foresees itself connected to the nuclear arena, and actively pursues collaborations with other countries in nuclear-related activities,” concludes a new study from the US Director of National Intelligence’s Open Source Center.

The analysis is unclassified and based on published information collected by intelligence analysts. It was posted on the website of the Federation of American Scientists Project on Government Secrecy.

Kazakhastan’s leader, Nursultan Nazarbaev, has skillfully balanced his country’s relations with the US, the EU, Russia, India, and China, according to the report.

Now Mr. Nazarbaev has said he wants to do more than export raw uranium. He wants to export more profitable fuel assemblies for nuclear reactors.

Currently, Kazakhstan carries out uranium enrichment activities only in joint ventures with Russia, on Russian soil, with Russian technicians.

“The concerns of the international community regarding the Kazakhstan-Russian enrichment cooperation … focus on Kazakhstan’s position as a country that may find it attractive to acquire enrichment technology, and Russia’s ability to provide such technology in order to maintain clout in its traditional sphere of influence and retain a resource-rich neighbor,” says the report.

Kazakhstan may be reaching out to cooperate with Iran, a nearby regional power. And while Nazarbaev has kept a firm grip on power since 1991, it is unclear who his successor might be. Plus, the country’s political and economic hierarchy is riddled with corruption, according to the US intelligence report.

China’s links to Iran a snag for sanctions

China’s links to Iran a snag for sanctions

Beijing’s premier says his country wants to deepen ties to Tehran, with which it has signed hefty oil deals.

By David Pierson

Reporting from Beijing – Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Thursday that his nation was committed to deepening its ties with Iran, a declaration that underscores the difficulty the United States will face in seeking broad economic sanctions against Tehran in an effort to rein in its nuclear program.

“The Sino-Iranian relationship has witnessed rapid development, as the two countries’ leaders have had frequent exchanges, and cooperation in trade and energy has widened and deepened,” Wen said at a meeting in Beijing with visiting Iranian Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi, according to the official New China News Agency.

The U.S. and its allies are counting on China and Russia, veto-wielding members of the U.N. Security Council, for support in pressuring Iran to abandon activities the West fears could lead to the development of nuclear weapons.

But Washington is finding little support in either Moscow or Beijing. On Tuesday, during a visit to Moscow by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said further sanctions on Iran would be “counterproductive.”

“We believe that at this stage all efforts must be focused on supporting the negotiating process,” Lavrov said.

President Obama disclosed last month that Iran was building a second uranium enrichment plant. Iranian officials say their nation’s nuclear program is for civilian energy purposes only, and Tehran has said it will allow United Nations inspectors to visit the facility.

But the United States, leading Western powers and Israel believe that the Islamic Republic’s ultimate aim is to develop nuclear weapons. The Security Council has imposed sanctions on Iran in each of the last three years on account of Tehran’s nuclear activities.

But undercutting hopes that China would take a tough stance on Iran now are the ever-growing economic ties between the two countries. More than 100 Chinese state firms operate in Iran, largely helping with infrastructure projects.

In the face of the sanctions already in place, two-way trade between China and Iran grew 35% last year, to $27 billion, according to irantracker.org.

More important, China has signed an estimated $120 billion worth of oil deals with Iran in the last five years to keep the world’s third-largest economy on a rapid growth path.

New punitive measures on Iran might drive up the price of oil for China, the world’s second-largest buyer of crude oil and a rapidly expanding consumer of automobiles.

Iran, for its part, needs China to help vitalize its oil and natural gas industries, which are underdeveloped because of the existing economic sanctions. Last year, the China National Petroleum Corp. signed a $1.76-billion deal with the National Iranian Oil Co. to tap Iran’s North Azadegan oil field, which is expected to produce 75,000 barrels a day by 2012.

In March, the two nations signed a $3.2-billion, three-year pact to develop the South Pars gas field beneath the Persian Gulf. Geologists say the underwater cavity may be the world’s largest source of natural gas. And in August, China signed a $3-billion deal to expand Iran’s Abadan and Persian Gulf refineries.

Because China has few oil reserves, it must go abroad to secure energy. Beijing often has little choice but to turn to volatile states such as Iran and Venezuela, because safer sources of oil have long been tapped by developed countries.

At the same time, China may have to balance its economic needs with maintaining a stable relationship with the U.S., especially now that Beijing would like to see itself as a bigger global player. Iran will be a key issue for Obama when he visits China in November.

Zhou Yongsheng, a professor at China Foreign Affairs University in Beijing, said China is in a difficult position.

“I think [Chinese officials'] decision is absolutely complicated by oil. They have to maintain good relationships with countries . . . where crude oil is produced.

“At the same time, the U.S. and Chinese relationship has reached new heights, and I think China will be willing to cooperate in many cases.”

India and Israel Getting Vocal About Pakistani Nukes

Will Israel and India allow unsecured Pakistani nukes in the wake of audacious weekend assault by Islamic militants on Pakistan’s army headquarters?

Sudhir Chadda
Oct. 12, 2009

Pakistani nukes are less secured today after what happened in the weekend. The audacious assault by Islamic militants on Pakistan’s army headquarters has raised the questions on Pakistan’s ability to keep the nukes safe from the hands of Islamic terrorists. India is nervous. Israel has lost its sleep. America is watching closely.

Many analysts believe that America is in full control of the situation and the nukes are in safe hands. According to media reports, a U.S. counter proliferation official in Washington said strong safeguards are in place and there is no reason to believe the nuclear arsenal is in imminent jeopardy of seizure by militants. The official, who commented on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the matter publicly, said there is a major difference between attacking a nuclear site and actually seizing and using the nuclear material stored inside. According to some think tanks, the warheads themselves are electronically locked to ensure that they cannot be detonated even if they fall in terrorists” hands

Some even believe that the nukes are not in Pakistan any longer after Khan fiasco.

Pakistan is estimated to have between 70 and 100 warheads, enough to keep India and Israel sleepless, according to Hans Kristensen, director of the Nuclear Information Project of the Federation of American Scientists.

The bigger question is if Pakistan’s National Command Authority, which oversees the nuclear arsenal, is already fully infiltrated by Al-Queda and Taliban.

Recenly, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton dismissed any suggestion militants could overthrow the government and gain control of the nuclear arsenal. “We have confidence in the Pakistani government and military’s control over nuclear weapons,” she said.

Africa: Poverty and Hunger – How Long Will This Continue to Plague Our Continent?

Africa: Poverty and Hunger – How Long Will This Continue to Plague Our Continent?

Archbishop Njongo Ndungane

Cape Town — October 16 is World Food Day, proclaimed in 1979 by the Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). In 1980, the UN General Assembly endorsed the observance of the Day in consideration of the fact that food is core for human
survival and well-being, and a fundamental human necessity.

On 17th October, 2009 the world will be commemorating the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. This marks exactly twenty-two (22) years when over a hundred thousand people gathered at the Trocadéro in Paris to honour the victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger. They proclaimed that poverty is a violation of human rights and affirmed the need to come together to ensure that these rights are respected. These convictions are inscribed in a commemorative stone unveiled on this day. Since then, people of all backgrounds, beliefs and social origins have gathered every year on October 17th to renew their commitment and show their solidarity with the poor.

I wonder what the world is saying or will be saying on these two days. Will it be the same rhetoric? Or would they be asking whether the world should be commemorating these two days when over 200 million people in Africa continue to go to bed hungry every day?

The tragedy in Africa is that we have talked a lot about poverty that it has lost its significance. It is a calamity that it would seem that the idea of malnourished children and of people dying of hunger does not scare us anymore! The urge to fight and end poverty is rapidly fading away and the sense of urgency completely lost among key role players. The dream to meet the MDGs by 2015 remains a pipe dream for many countries in Africa. In the 2008 UN MDGs Report, it is estimated that low pay jobs leave one in five developing country workers mired in poverty while the proportion of employed people living below the $1 a day between 1997 and 2007 has increased from 51.4% to
55.5%. For millions in the world today, especially those in Africa, jobs provide some form of relief from poverty but jobs should also provide a certain degree of security for the poor.

Halving the population living in poverty and ending hunger by 2015, as enshrined in the MDGs, is such an important goal for our governments and without it the rest of the goals are unattainable. This then makes food the first and foremost issue that should be given top priority before any other goals begin to make sense. An example is that you cannot give a woman whose child is crying for food a mosquito net to combat malaria!

Governments and donors need to apply the same sense of urgency to people living in abject  poverty as they have done in responding to calamities such as war, floods and other natural disasters.

Africa has been confronted with what some people have referred to as a "double" burden of obesity and hunger as millions take up increasingly sedentary lives in cities and the global financial crisis hits rural populations’ food security.

Under-nutrition continues to plague sub-Saharan Africa, where 32 percent of the world’s hungry people live. Yet according to the recent research by the International Congress of Nutrition (ICN) in Bangkok, those migrating from the countryside to cities are eating too much fatty food, leading to rising rates of obesity, diabetes, hypertension and high blood pressure.

In Madagascar, for example, about 1.6 percent of children were overweight in 1992s, while 35.5 percent were underweight and 60.9 percent suffered stunted growth. By 2004, 6.2 percent of children were overweight while 36.8 percent were underweight, and 52.8 percent were stunted. The rate of overweight and obese women also doubled between 1997 and 2004, to 8.1 percent overall. And in 1987, 5.5 percent of Moroccan children were overweight; by 2004, that figure had increased to 13.3 percent.

It is not only morally unacceptable but a crime against humanity to allow people to go to bed hungry everyday, particularly the case where there are people who are overweight who live side-by-side with people who are acutely malnourished and under-nourished.

We are also aware that extreme hunger and malnutrition have been brought about by neglect of Agriculture. As Africa we have committed, we have abundant land, some of which we are giving away and we have a lot of rhetoric and good policies on paper. But words, words and words will not feed the poor! We need action; implementation and political muscle and will to feed the hungry.

At least five countries in Africa are making strides in improving their governance and ensuring household food security – Malawi, Burkina Faso, Mali Senegal and Ethiopia while others like Mozambique and Zambia are also among those that are showing positive signs. However, I am aware that one of the major challenges arising from the poverty crises is the lack of African governments meeting their commitments on development delivery especially those related to key sectors like agriculture. The emerging trend is that even though people are growing plenty of food,
much of it is exported to other countries while most families remain without food.

There are still more than 17 countries in Africa that spend less than 5% of their budgets on agriculture. There is no excuse for people to go hungry amidst abundant natural and human resources. Infact, if and when a government successfully feeds its nation, it should be regarded as one of the key indicators for good governance. We cannot afford to let millions of people go hungry every day. Where has the energy and sense of urgency that the faith community had during the Jubilee campaigns against debt gone to? How about another Jubilee to end poverty?

African Monitor calls upon the African governments to be more responsive to the needs of the poor especially in creating mechanisms or safety nets that protect the poor and most vulnerable from falling deeper into poverty. The commitments that the governments have made towards Agriculture are commendable, but they need to put their money where their mouth is. The billions of dollars sitting in Swiss Banks could be repatriated to Africa to feed the millions that go to bed hungry every night.

As we commemorate World Food Day and the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, we reiterate that the right to food is a fundamental human right and it is hence incumbent upon all of us to end hunger now. And it can be done so as to uplift the dignity of the poor and safeguard their future and that of the next generation.

Kuwait: Israel killed civilians intentionally

Kuwait: Israel killed civilians intentionally

UN’s Human Rights Council discusses report accusing Jewish state of committing war crimes in Gaza. Kuwait’s representative says IDF destroyed civilian facilities on purpose. PA rep: We fully support report, call for its implementation. Israeli Arabs’ Adalah organization says ‘Gaza has turned into a black hole with no legal defense’

He asked why no one was doing anything against Israel, which he referred to as “an occupying power, which instead of defending civilians, is destroying the Geneva Convention.” He then answered his own question by saying that Israel murdered and evaded punishment.

Israeli Ambassador Aharon Leshno Yaar asked to rebuke the Kuwaiti representative over the language he used to describe what was happening in Gaza.

The Kuwaiti continued, “We are pessimistic.” He quoted Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who had said that those who believe a peace agreement could be reached are suffering from illusions. The Afghan representative slammed Israel as well.

The Palestinian representative said that the discussion gave the international community the opportunity to demand that Israel claim responsibility. “We believe that Israel’s collective punishment is part of a policy,” she said. “We express our full support for the report, and call for its implementation so that justice can be made.”

She claimed that Israel “is responsible for the war crimes it committed in Gaza.” Compromising the Palestinians’ rights and giving Israel the green light will damage chances for peace in the region, she added.

Rights groups: It’s time to act

Non-governmental bodies slammed Israel’s actions as well during the discussion. A Human Rights Watch representative said that “this report gives the international community an opportunity to strengthen international law. There will be no justice and peace without claiming responsibility. The Israeli justice system has failed in providing aid to the Palestinians time and again.”

She noted that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had said that Israelis would not be prosecuted for crimes allegedly committed in Gaza in any event. “In east Jerusalem, which is separated from the West Bank by a fence, houses are being demolished systematically,” she said. “Mr. President, it’s time to act like Judge (Richard) Goldstone writes.”

She called on the Council to make a decision that would strengthen international law. “We call on the sides to investigate themselves, and if they fail to do so, it is our duty to bring the matter to international justice.”

A representative of Adalah – The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel also took part in the discussion. She said that since Operation Cast Lead, Israeli human rights organizations have demanded an independent investigation, but that this demand was rejected.

“Since 2006, Gaza has turned into a ‘black hole’ with no legal defense. An Israeli court has approved the closing of the crossings to Gaza,” she said.

The representative complained that “since the second intifada Israel is not investigating its actions. The best example is the assassination of Salah Shehade – no investigation has been conducted in Israel.”

Why Fayyad plan for Palestine has Israelis worried

Why Fayyad plan for Palestine has Israelis worried

By Douglas Hamilton

JERUSALEM (Reuters) – The future Palestinian state some Israeli strategists have in mind would be bordered entirely by Israel, with large areas in its middle under Israeli control.

Israel would own the Jordan Valley, part of the central West Bank highlands above it, plus uplands to the west overlooking Jerusalem and Israeli cities on the coastal plain.

The possibility of this blueprint becoming Israeli policy is deeply worrying to Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

Faced with the offer of peace talks on such a basis, his answer would be “forget it”, he said this week. It would be, Fayyad cautioned, a “Mickey Mouse” state nothing like what Palestinians seek.

Western-backed Fayyad clearly has the attention of Israeli conservatives in the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, headed by Dore Gold, an adviser to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Earlier this month it published an appreciative critique of what it called a positive and bold plan Fayyad unveiled in August, to build the institutional, administrative and physical framework necessary for Palestinian statehood over the next two years.

Fayyad, a U.S.-educated economist and former senior World Bank official, is courageously challenging the Palestinian policy of liberation through armed struggle by proposing peaceful, proactive development, the Israeli paper said.

The plan already had robust U.S. and European support and promises of aid in the billions. Israel also backs Palestinian economic development and reform from bottom up to establish a demilitarised state, the paper said.

Fayyad is challenging Palestinian hardliners of the dominant Fatah movement who are deeply suspicious of his vision of the need to do more than simply opposing Israeli occupation.

So far, so good. But unlike the familiar forms of Palestinian resistance which Israel has coped with, the Fayyad plan leads into dangerous, uncharted territory, the paper said.

“Fayyad’s intention is to create facts on the ground that will garner major international support and lead to pressure to transform recognition of a de facto Palestinian state in 2011 into a de jure state in the event that the Palestinian Authority and Israel fail to reach a negotiated solution,” it said.

RISK OF WAR

Palestinian leaders who, like Fayyad, want peace with Israel expect a state with borders — give or take a few land swaps to accommodate major Israeli settlements — where they lay before the 1967 Middle East war, when Israel occupied the West Bank.

The state they want would border Israel to the north, west and south but its eastern border would be the Kingdom of Jordan, and its territory would be whole and contiguous, with a land link to the Gaza Strip enclave on the Mediterranean shore.

This is the assumption of the Fayyad plan, and it poses a grave threat to Israel’s security, said the analysis by Dan Diker and Pinhas Inbari which Fayyad complimented for its professionalism, adding “although of course I do not agree with it”.

On legal and security grounds, the paper said, Israel cannot countenance such a development and should oppose it now.

“A unilaterally declared state that claims the pre-1967 lines as its border could end up thrusting Israel, the Palestinian Authority and other regional actors into a storm of instability and possibly armed conflict,” the analysts said.

They further claim that Fayyad’s “unilateral” project to create facts on the ground would violate the 1993 Olso Accords undertaking with Israel not to change the status of the West Bank pending peace negotiations.

Oslo was 16 years ago, Fayyad says, and the talks have still not ended the Israeli occupation. And pointing to some 100 Israeli West Bank settlements deemed illegal under international law, he says: “Look who’s talking about unilateralism.”

But the Israeli analysis (see it at http://www.jcpa.netvision.il) said Netanyahu will insist on “defensible borders” for Israel in any two-state solution with the Palestinians.

“Israel’s requirement of ‘defensible borders’ involves its continuing control in so-called Area C including the strategically vital Jordan Valley and the high ground surrounding Jerusalem and overlooking Israel’s vulnerable cities along the Mediterranean coast,” the paper stated.

“The Jordan Valley serves as a vital barrier against any potential invasion from the east (and) an important natural barrier to the potential flow of rockets to West Bank hilltops overlooking Israel’s coastline” major airport and main cities.

Under the Oslo accords, the West Bank were divided into three zones, A, B and C, pending a permanent peace agreement.

Area C, where Israel maintains security and civil control, compromises more than 60 percent of West Bank territory. It includes the Jordan Valley where Israel has transformed the desert flats into lucrative agri-business settlements, west of the no-go military zone of border patrols and electronic fences on the frontier with Jordan.

This is the place where Fayyad envisages an international airport serving the new Palestinian state.

Deformed babies in Fallujah Iraq LETTER TO THE UNITED NATIONS

Deformed babies in Fallujah

Iraq LETTER TO THE UNITED NATIONS

Fatima Ahmed was born in Fallujah with deformities that include two heads

October 14, 2009

H.E. Dr. Ali Abdussalam Treki
President of the Sixty-fourth Session of the United Nations General Assembly
United Nations
New York, NY 10017

October 12th 2009

Your Excellency,

RE DEFORMED BABIES IN FALLUJAH

Young women in Fallujah in Iraq are terrified of having children because of the increasing number of babies born grotesquely deformed, with no heads, two heads, a single eye in their foreheads, scaly bodies or missing limbs. In addition, young children in Fallujah are now experiencing hideous cancers and leukaemias. These deformities are now well documented, for example in television documentaries on SKY UK on September 1 2009, and on SKY UK June 2008. Our direct contact with doctors in Fallujah report that:

In September 2009, Fallujah General Hospital had 170 new born babies, 24% of whom were dead within the first seven days, a staggering 75% of the dead babies were classified as deformed.

This can be compared with data from the month of August in 2002 where there were 530 new born babies of whom six were dead within the first seven days and only one birth defect was reported.

Doctors in Fallujah have specifically pointed out that not only are they witnessing unprecedented numbers of birth defects but premature births have also considerably increased after 2003. But what is more alarming is that doctors in Fallujah have said, “a significant number of babies that do survive begin to develop severe disabilities at a later stage”.

As one of a number of doctors, scientists and those with deep concern for Iraq, Dr Chris Burns-Cox, a British hospital physician, wrote a letter to the Rt. Hon. Clare Short, M.P. asking about this situation. She wrote a letter to the Rt. Hon.Douglas Alexander, M.P. the Secretary of State of the Department for International Development (a post she had held before she resigned on a matter of principle in May 2003 ) asking for clarification of the position of deformed children in Fallujah.

She received a reply dated 3rd September 2009 (two days after the Sky TV broadcast of 1st September 2009 ) from a junior minister, deputy to The Secretary of State, Mr. Gareth Thomas MP, Duty Minister, Department for International Development. In his reply he denies that there are more than two or three deformed babies in Fallujah in a year and asserts that there is, therefore, no problem. This is at wild variance with reports coming out of Fallujah. One grave digger of a single cemetery is burying four to five babies a day, most of which he says are deformed.

Clare Short passed us a copy of this letter. It bears a remarkable similarity to three other written answers we have received over a four year period, in regard to child health and the use of depleted uranium. All these letters are based on lies and an aim to confuse the recipients. In her autobiography “Honorable Deception?” Clare Short says “The first instinct of Number 10 (Downing Street) is to lie.”

We regard the mendacity of Mr. Thomas’s letter, and of the other letters we have received, as extremely serious. These letters do not deal with minor matters of corruption, or taxes, but do deal with the use of armed forces and deadly weapons.

The use of certain weapons has tremendous repercussions. Iraq will become a country, if it has not already done so, where it is advisable not to have children. Other countries will watch what has happened in Iraq, and imitate the Coalition Allies’ total disregard of the United Nations Charter, The Geneva, and Hague Conventions, and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Some countries, such as Afghanistan, will also come to experience the very long term damage to the environment, measured in billions of years, and the devastating effect of depleted uranium and white phosphorous munitions.

If, as we say in our letter to the Duty Minister of the Department for International Development, the UK Government clearly does not know the effects of the weapons it uses, nor, as a matter of policy, does “it do body counts”, how can the UK Government judge whether it is conducting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan according to International Law, especially in terms of “proportionality” and long term damage to the natural environment? How can the UK know about the illegality of the weapons systems it sells on the international market, such as the “Storm Shadow” missile, if the very Department of the Government that is supposed to assess the deaths and medical needs of children and adults in Iraq is not telling the truth.

We request from the United Nations General Assembly the following:

1. To acknowledge that there is a serious problem regarding the unprecedented number of birth defects and cancer cases in Iraq specifically in Fallujah, Basra, Baghdad and Al – Najaf.

2. To set up an independent committee to conduct a full investigation into the problem of the increased number of birth defects and cancers in Iraq.

3. To implement the cleaning up of toxic materials used by the occupying forces including Depleted Uranium, and White Phosphorus.

4. To prevent children and adults entering contaminated areas to minimize exposure to these hazards.

5. To investigate whether war crimes, or crimes against humanity, have been committed, and thereby uphold the United Nations Charter, The Geneva and Hague Conventions, and The Rome Statute of The International Criminal Court.

Please find enclosed a copy of our letter to Mr Gareth Thomas, dated 12th October 2009, and his letter to The Rt Hon Clare Short, M.P. dated 3rd September 2009, and enclosures relating to this matter.

European Parliament discusses legal case against Israel

October 14th 2009

An official meeting held at the European Parliament attended by a
number of MEPs and various civic organisations across Europe. The
meeting discussed the legal case launched by Claire Short and the
European Campaign to End the Siege on Gaza against the European Union.

The legal case, launched on the first of September 2009, levelled
charges against the EU, which was presented to the President who was
given 28 days to reply. In it was stated that under the EU- Israel
Association Agreement, the EU, in light of Israel’s violation of
International Human rights Law and Humanitarian Law in the occupied
Palestinian Territory, has failed in its duty to take effective action
against intransgressible principals in international law.

The legal document also cited a raft of reports compiled by
international authorities including the UN was cited as documentary
evidence of clear violations of international law by Israel. In light
of the mounting evidence the European Community has clear obligations
under the Association Agreement to take punitive steps against Israel.

Claims of violations by Israel are now also further supported by the
conclusions of another investigation headed by the respected
international judge Richard Goldstone.

The combined reports found several violations of international law in
operation cast lead. Richard Falk, the special Rapporteur for the UN
reported that during the military intervention Israel deliberately
obstructed the work of humanitarian personnel leaving the poor without
basic medical, food and other services in violation of both
international humanitarian law and human rights law’.

Richard Goldstone in his 575-page report, released on September 15,
2009, documented serious violations of international humanitarian law
by Israel, with some incidents amounting to war crimes and possible
crimes against humanity, including willful killings, deliberate
attacks on civilian objects, wanton destruction of civilian property,
indiscriminate attacks, the use of human shields, and collective
punishment against Gaza’s civilian population in the form of a
continuing blockade.

‘Given the overwhelming evidence the Secretary General, Javier
Solano made an unconvincing defense’ said Claire Short a British MP.
She further went on to say ‘In his response, Javier Solano, the
Secretary General, pointed to a series of initiatives taken by EU with
the view to achieving an immediate and permanent ceasefire.

The EU, he said, issued a statement emphasizing that it was conscious
of the suffering and anguish of the civilian population and calling
for an immediate and permanent ceasefire. Added to his list included
its participation in a summit in Egypt, support for the Egypt
initiative, further pronouncements of its concerns and calls to
respect international law. Needless to say these measures were
ineffective’.

While still waiting for a response from the President of the European
Commission, further strategies in seeking legal action was discussed.
It was unanimously agreed that further pressure needs to be applied to
governments in member states through petitions which included names of
politicians and members of civic organizations.

A Profile In Courage: Turkey Takes A Stand For Justice

Alan Sabrosky s Erdogan-Netanyahu_obamaBy Dr. Alan Sabrosky*

There is always something compelling about a “David and Goliath” confrontation. Most of us prefer winners to losers, and almost everyone feels a thrill when the underdog takes a stand and prevails.

This is the surprising situation now unfolding in the rising drama of the Goldstone Report on Gaza. Goliath — in this instance, Israel plus the US in its usual role of Bibi Netanyahu’s “Uncle Tom” — assumed that broad threats and a predictable US veto on the UN Security Council would kill that report. And last week, that seemed likely to happen.

But David — in the form of Turkey’s forthright Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan — isn’t buying that at all. His courageous stance has a good chance of not only bringing the Goldstone Report dramatically into view so publicly that even the Jewish-dominated US mainstream media cannot ignore it, but also opening the political sewer that is Israel’s oppression of the Palestinians for all the world — especially the American public — to see.

Genesis in Gaza

The genesis of this, of course, was Israel’s brutal assault on Gaza in the weeks before Obama assumed office, and its subsequent condemnation not by the UN Security Council (its American puppet-patron prevented that), but in a report prepared by a UN Human Rights Council commission headed by a respected Jewish jurist from South Africa, Richard Goldstone.

Yet even before that report appeared, Erdogan had already clashed with Israel over its assault on Gaza, walking out from a debate with Israeli President Shimon Peres in January 2009. He has continued his criticism of Israeli actions in Gaza and against Palestinians since that time, excluding Israel from participating in a recent NATO exercise, and this week continuing his condemnation of Israel for using incendiaries against civilians and harming children during the Gaza onslaught.

Turkey’s position is potentially critical here. As a long-standing member of NATO and a secular Moslem country having formal diplomatic relations with Israel, it cannot easily be dismissed by its critics as an anti-Semitic rogue. Erdogan’s position on this issue is popular at home, and evidentally supported by the Turkish military. He also makes no bones about calling Israeli and US actions what they are, something so much of the world — and especially most Arab countries, whose leaders ought in their own self-interest to know better — take great pains to ignore, or even to facilitate.

It now appears that the Goldstone Report will be formally debated by the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC). This is certainly where the US prefers the matter to end, if it has to go anywhere within the UN, asserting that the report is “deeply flawed” because in practice it fails to totally exonerate Israel (it must be SO hard for US Ambassador Rice to look in the mirror without becoming ill after parroting such remarks, but perhaps she is used to it by now….). And that may happen.

But it need not do so. At this point, people in three critical UN positions all want the Gaza report (and implicitly, the Israeli-Palestinian Question) to be debated now. They are the Secretary-General of the UN, the President of the UN General Assembly, and the President of the UN Security Council. This is an unusual combination, and one not likely to reappear anytime soon, which makes the speedy execution of the report’s recommendations all the more important.

Moreover, the flip-flop of the Palestinian Authority on this issue, first asking for the report to be deferred and then reversing itself in the face of mounting criticism from Palestinians and others, may work for the better. The uproar created a degree of general public awareness of the whole controversy, and brought many Palestinians from both Hamas and Fatah together more than I have seen in years.

Looking Beyond the US Veto

Like most bullies who suddenly see justice approaching, Israel’s government alternates among bluster, truculence and threats, still expecting good old Uncle Sam — doting, very strong, and not very bright at all — to intercede at the first and last moments alike. And you can be sure that AIPAC and company will be doing their utmost to make that happen.

So the rest of the world should appreciate two facts. One is that the Israeli threat to forgo peace talks with the Palestinians is both irrelevant and worthless. It is irrelevant because the hapless Palestinian Authority with which Israel might be talking does not represent or speak for the large majority of the Palestinian people. It is worthless because peace to Israel means submission to its will: Israel will return no territories, evacuate no settlements, allow no Palestinian refugees to return, and negotiate nothing except the incidental details of its dominance.

The other is that there is no inherent reason for the Goldstone Report to die in the Human Rights Council, or even in the Security Council. Erdogan has indicated a willingness for Turkey, which holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council this month, to bring it before that body regardless of what transpires in the HRC. That would move it a step further, where after presumably acrimonious discussion, it would be vetoed by the US, perhaps with Britain and/or France joining it.

At that point, the President of the Security Council, in concert with the President of the General Assembly and the UN Secretary-General, should be encouraged to make every effort in their own spheres of responsibility to bring the debate before the General Assembly under the provisions of UNGA 377A (the “Uniting for Peace Resolution”).
An artifact of the Cold War designed to circumvent Soviet vetoes, it is little known now but absolutely applicable to the smoldering situation in the Middle East. Its great virtues are that it gives the General Assembly the enforcement powers normally within the purview of the Security Council, and vetoes do not apply.

This is a unique opportunity. Anticipate it. Prepare for it. Make the most of it. Win.

Bomb kills 10 at Peshawar mosque, police station

By RIAZ KHAN, Associated Press Writer Riaz Khan, Associated Press Writer 3 mins ago

PESHAWAR, Pakistan – A suicide attacker detonated a car bomb at a mosque next to a police station in the northwest Pakistani city of Peshawar on Friday, killing 10 people in the latest bloodshed in an unrelenting wave of terror that has hit the country.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but suspicion fell on the Taliban, who have been blamed for two weeks of attacks that have killed more than 150 people across the country and appear aimed at forcing the government to abandon a planned offensive into the militants’ stronghold along the Afghan border.

The attacker in Peshawar drove an explosives-laden vehicle into the wall of the mosque and detonated the bomb, badly damaging the mosque as well as the neighboring police station, said police official Bashir Khan.

The target of the attack in the main city in Pakistan‘s Taliban-riddled North West Frontier province was not immediately clear. The police station was heavily guarded and surrounded by barricades making it nearly impossible for any attacker to directly hit it.

Television footage showed the upper part of the wall of the brick mosque shorn off. Security forces swarmed the area as ambulances arrived at the scene. A twisted chunk of metal on the ground was in flames, and a small white car’s front section was destroyed. In nearby Lady Reading Hospital, rescue workers rushed wounded victims through the hallways on stretchers.

The blast killed 10 people, including two women and a schoolboy, and injured 11 others, said Sahibzada Mohammed Anis, a senior government official.

On Thursday, a car bomb in Peshawar killed a small child at a housing complex for government employees.

The newest violence came a day after militants launched coordinated attacks on three law enforcement compounds in the country’s second-largest city of Lahore, killing 19 people as well as the nine attackers.

Two officials said initial investigations into the Lahore attacks showed Taliban from the Afghan border region and militants from Punjab were responsible.

“This was a well-coordinated Taliban operation supported by local groups,” Umer Virk, head of the Lahore anti-terrorist police, told The Associated Press.

The violence across the nation has fueled concerns that the Taliban are forging links with other militant groups in the country, an alliance that would vastly increase the threats to the U.S.-allied government. Many ordinary Pakistanis are anxiously questioning whether the state has the ability to avert the danger.

Observers say Punjab’s militant problem is most pervasive in its south. But speaking to reporters in Lahore on Friday, provincial Law Minister Rana Sanaullah played down any such threat.

“The Taliban don’t have any authority in southern Punjab, and there is no need for any operation against them,” he said.

Sanaullah, who said authorities had arrested some people in connection with the assaults, also defended the performance of security agencies during the standoffs, and said previous intelligence about the possible attacks was too vague to act upon.

The tactics used in Lahore were similar to previous strikes blamed on the Taliban network in South Waziristan and allied militants from Punjab, the nation’s most populous and powerful province. The methods include using teams of gunmen carrying suicide vests.

The government has said the planning for the attacks is often done near the Afghan border, while the foot soldiers are recruited in Punjab. In claiming responsibility for another recent attack, the Taliban said one of their cells in Punjab had carried it out.

Pakistanis have grown less inclined to support the Taliban over the past year, opinion polls have shown, but many are expressing anger and helplessness over how to deal with the strikes.

“The terrorists seem more committed to their cause than the government is to eliminating them,” said Saima Ahmed, 33, a bank employee in the southern city of Karachi. “Our inherent weaknesses, corruption, and inability to govern the country are now exposed fully. It’s total chaos all over the country.”

The U.S. hopes that a Pakistani army operation in South Waziristan will help break much of the militant network that threatens both Pakistan and American troops across the border in Afghanistan.

In Lahore, retired police officer Mohammad Sadique blamed the U.S. for the problems.

“So long as the American forces are present in Afghanistan, these terrorist attacks in Pakistan will continue,” he said, adding that he condemned the strikes because “no Muslim can kill his own brother or sister.”

The Pakistani army has given no time frame for the expected offensive in South Waziristan. It has reportedly already sent two divisions totaling 28,000 men and blockaded the area. Analysts say that with winter approaching, any push would likely have to begin soon to be successful.

Lawsuit seeks to halt H1N1 flu vaccination campaign in US

Lawsuit seeks to halt H1N1 flu vaccination campaign in US

WASHINGTON – New York medical workers took legal action Thursday to halt a massive A(H1N1) flu inoculation programme being rolled out across the United States, claiming the vaccines have not been properly tested.

Lawyers for the group filed a temporary restraining order in a Washington federal court against government medical regulators they claim rushed H1N1 vaccines to the public without adequately testing their safety and efficacy.

“None of the vaccines against H1N1 have been properly tested,” attorney Jim
Turner, one of half a dozen lawyers working on the case, told AFP.

The complaint filed Thursday argued that far from preventing a massive outbreak of H1N1 flu, the “live attenuated influenza virus nasal mist vaccine could trigger” an H1N1 pandemic.

“I don’t know of another live vaccine for flu. So you have immediately a new problem you don’t have with a killed vaccine,” Turner told AFP.

Officials at the National Institutes of Health have said that trials of H1N1 flu vaccine began in August and delivered results last month, showing that the vaccine was well tolerated and produced a robust immune response in older children and adults in good health with just a single dose.

But Turner insisted that “the FDA did not do the proper testing to show safety and efficacy of this vaccine, which is under the law a new drug.

“When I say test data, I don’t mean some professor at some medical school somewhere infected some students and said ‘I don’t see any problems.’

“What I mean is carefully conducted double blind placebo controlled studies trials done in accordance with FDA regulations, and a whole series of them to look at dosing… which are then reviewed by FDA scientists.

“None of that has been done on this vaccination and we’re saying the law requires it to be done,” Turner said.

The suit was brought on behalf of a group of doctors, nurses and other medical personnel in New York, where health care professionals who see patients are required to be vaccinated against H1N1, Turner said.

If the complaint is upheld, it would stop the roll-out of the H1N1 vaccine nationwide, said Turner, who accused public health officials of hyping the H1N1 flu outbreak.

“Officials have said the virus is so much like the ordinary flu virus that they don’t need to do special new drug testing on it because it’s just the same old virus with a minor change to it,” he said.

“We’re saying, if that’s the case, then all the hype about this thing being a worldwide threat is misplaced and they’ve stampeded the state of New York into taking an action they never would have taken if it were just another flu.”

Last week, some 2.4 million doses of nasal spray vaccine made of greatly weakened, but live, H1N1 virus were delivered to state and local health authorities around the United States.

Karen Lancaster, a spokeswoman for the MedImmune, which manufactures the nasal spray H1N1 vaccine, told AFP that the the company has had a seasonal flu vaccine made with weakened live virus on the market since 2003.

This week, millions of doses stocks of injectable vaccine were delivered and administered to people in groups deemed to be at particular risk from H1N1 flu, including children and health care professionals.

US public health officials want to vaccinate tens of millions of Americans by year’s end against H1N1 flu, which has claimed more than 4,500 lives worldwide since an outbreak of H1N1 was first reported in Mexico in April.
