Russian President Dmitry Medvedev proposed on Wednesday breathing new life into bilateral economic projects in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Tajikistan launched during the Soviet era.

“Resolution of a number of social issues depends on the extent to which we will be able to restart these [economic] processes,” Medvedev said at a meeting with his Afghan, Pakistani, and Tajik counterparts in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi.

He said the four countries had a number of projects, mainly in energy and social development, that were started during the Soviet era.

It was not immediately clear what their status was at present.

“I believe it would be a good idea to revisit them so as to add momentum to economic development and tackle a number of pressing issues,” Medvedev said.

Earlier on Wednesday, Medvedev had bilateral meetings with his Pakistani, Afghan, and Tajik counterparts.

One person injured as oil platform explodes in Gulf off Louisiana

An oil platform has exploded in the Gulf of Louisiana, injuring at least one person. The Coast Guard tells MSNBC that the platform is still burning, but says it is not a drilling rig.

Update at 12:52 p.m ET: USA TODAY’s Alan Levin reports that several Coast Guard helicopters were on scene by late morning and attempting to rescue the 13 workers who had been thrown into the water, according to Commander Cheri Ben-Iesau. The crew had donned brightly colored survival gear known as “Gumby suits” and there had been no reports of fatalities, Ben-Iesau says. according to Levin. “We are actively pulling them out of the water right now,” she says.

It was not clear whether today’s explosion was the result of a blowout or whether it had caused any leaks of crude oil, Ben-Iesau says. The platform is owned by Mariner Energy. The AP reports that the platform was not producing oil at the time of the accident.

Update at 12:14 p.m. ET: The New Orleans Tiems-Picayune descrbies the facility, called Vermillion 380, as a “fixed, manned production platform.” The newspaper says the platform is not involved in drilling and, unlike the ill-fated BP rig, is not a floating rig, but rather is a fixed platform.

Update at 12:11 p.m. ET: The Coast Guard tells MSNBC that the facility is not a rig, but is a platform that does not do any drilling.

Update at 12:04 p.m. ET: The rig, owned by Mariner Energy, is located west of the BP spill site, the Associated Press reports. The incident was first reported by a commercial helicopter company around 10:30 a.m. ET, according to Coast Guard Petty Officer Casey Ranel. The Coast Guard confirmes there is one injury, but no deaths. The platform is in about 2,500 feet of water, the Coast Guard said, but is not currently producing, the AP reports.

Update at 11:48 a.m. ET: Coast Guard Petty Officer Casey Ranel says a helicopter was sent to the site after a report that the rig was on fire “and that there was smoke and there were people in the water,” The Times-Picayune of New Orleansreports.

Update at 11:41 a.m. ET: The Coast Guard says the oil rig is located 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay, Louisiana.

Update at 11:38 a.m. ET: MSNBC quotes Coast Guard Petty Officer John Edwards as saying one worker has been injured, but he did not know the extent of the injuries. Edwards says 9 helicopters and some fixed-wing aircraft as well as four Coast Guard cutters have been sent to the site.

Update at 11:35 a.m. ET: MSNBC quotes a Coast Guard spokesman as saying all of the workers were wearing protective gear.

Armenian and Azerbaijani Aircraft In Latest Escalation

Destroyed three Armenian occupants

Armenian units made another attempt to break the front line, killing two soldiers AR Sun

DZH.ALEKPEROVA

Yesterday, August 31, during the day several times clashed between Azerbaijani and Armenian aircraft on the front line near the village of Chily Terter (1news.az) the fighting took place early in the morning from 5.30 to 7.00, then in the evening from 17.00 to 18.00 and from 21.00 to 00.00. According to the officer’s N-tion of the army of Azerbaijan, Armenian units attempted to break through the front line and were rebuffed on our side. Armenian units from occupied villages Talysh attacked Azerbaijani positions near the village of Chily.

The heaviest fighting took place after nightfall, after 21.00, when it was used not only small arms, but, apparently, grenade launchers. As a result of the evening fighting killed three Armenian soldiers and several wounded. According to the Defense Ministry of Azerbaijan, as a result of fighting heroically killed two Azerbaijani soldiers: Amir Vugar Amirali oglu, born in 1991, called for service in April 2009 Imishli MERs and Nabi Abdullaev Parvin oglu, born in 1991, called in April 2009 Sabirabad MERs.

Recall that the conflict between the two countries of South Caucasus began in 1988 due to Armenian territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent districts – 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory – are under the occupation of the Armenian Forces. In May 1994 the parties reached a cease-fire, and still under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chaired by Russia, France and the United States are currently holding peaceful negotiations. Adopted UN Security Council resolution on the release of four occupied Nagorno-Karabakh and adjacent territories has not yet been implemented by Armenia.

“On August 31 was received very alarming information from the battle area, specifically with Tartar direction, that night was an attempt to cross the line of Azerbaijani-Armenian front, and then opened fire. According to my data, from the Armenian side were only six of the wounded and dead. But besides this, two of our soldiers, Amirov Vugar Abdullayev and Parvin Nabi, heroically died, “- said” echo “the military expert, Lieutenant-Colonel Uzeir Jafarov.

“Normally, before some kind of negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, Azerbaijan or any other country are such provocation by the Armenians. Apparently, the forthcoming visit of Medvedev to our country, the Armenian side agreed to give the negotiations a kind, from their point of view, color, taking such a step. This fact, they tried to attract attention and to remind Russia that the country has acted as a guarantor in the settlement of the Karabakh conflict. This does not seem plausible, but there is no smoke without fire. Regardless of what reason has played a role in the act of the Armenians, because of this killing our soldiers “- the expert said.

In his opinion, Armenians attempted to penetrate into our territory, and gunfire. And the Armenian side, of course, suffered a loss, regardless of what they say. Unfortunately, such cases are often repeated. Despite the fact that regularly monitor, which did not give. And this incident has once again proved it.

“Until there is such a situation, we will repeatedly lose soldiers. This year’s death toll reached 60 people. And there are also non-combat losses, that is, it turns out that for the sake of political ambition Azerbaijan loses his children. And Armenians as nagleli and continue become impudent “, – concluded Jafarov. Yesterday the soldiers of the Azerbaijani army, who died in repelling the attack provocative group of Armenian Armed Forces in Terter direction of the front, were buried. As the correspondent of APA, who died heroically Vugar Amirov was buried in his native village Hoschobanly Imishli, and Parvin Abdullayev – in his native village Khalfan Sabirabad. At the funeral attended by military personnel, representatives of executive authorities, public and local residents.

Afghan Police Out Of Bullets, Out Of Gas–Obama’s Great Hope

Afghan Police’s Lack of Guns and Gas Shows U.S. Exit Plan Flaw

The Afghan police unit rated best by U.S.-led forces last year now can’t function on its own and has ceded up to half its district to the Taliban, showing how hard it will be for U.S. troops to carry out a planned withdrawal.

Only half of 285 policemen at Baghlan-e-Jadid in northern Afghanistan received U.S.-sponsored training, at least 40 percent are illiterate and their Kalashnikov rifles are too few, often jam and lack ammunition, district police chief Amin Mangal said in an interview at his office July 28. Each police vehicle gets five liters (1.25 gallons) of gasoline a day to help patrol 2,200 square kilometers (850 square miles) of mountainous terrain, he said.

While U.S. mentors last year rated the police unit capable of independent operations, now “our capabilities are very low,” and Taliban dominate between 30 percent and 50 percent of the district, Mangal said.

Such deficiencies buttress a U.S. general’s statement Aug. 23 that Afghan police and troops won’t be ready to take over security next July when President Barack Obama has vowed to begin removing soldiers. At best, by October 2011, Afghan forces “in small, isolated pockets” might “have the lead, with coalition enablers supporting them,” Army Lieutenant General William Caldwell, who oversees their training, told reporters at the Pentagon.

A Defense Department auditor says the U.S. has spent more than $25 billion over eight years, half of its reconstruction funding for Afghanistan, to build the police and army.

‘Lose a War’

Flaws in that effort have left the Afghan forces weak, and mean the U.S. and its allies may “lose a war they had once won,” said a July draft report by Anthony Cordesman of the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies.

In Baghlan-e-Jadid, a mountainous farming district centered 275 kilometers (170 miles) north of Kabul that is part of a key transport corridor, the recent arrival of 450 Afghan troops means there is one policeman or soldier for every 211 of the 155,000 residents.

Suppressing armed conflict and building governance — as in Bosnia, Kosovo and Northern Ireland — typically has required one such “force provider” for every 20 residents, according toJames Quinlivan, an analyst at the Santa Monica, California- based RAND Corporation.

Afghanistan’s police face an extra burden after President Hamid Karzai said Aug. 17 the force must take over protection of foreign embassies and offices in Kabul from private security firms that he ordered closed.

Training Mission

While the 10-month-old project headed by Caldwell, the NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan, “is already far more effective than in the past,” it has too few resources and “may require one or two extra years” to meet even preliminary U.S. goals toward Afghan forces taking over, Cordesman wrote.

Caldwell says his mission has exceeded this year’s target for expanding Afghan security forces even though it remains short of trainers.

DynCorp International Inc., based in Falls Church, Virginia, is the largest provider of civilian trainers to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s police-building program, the mission’s spokesman, U.S. Air Force Major Lindsay Logsdon, said in an e-mail. He and DynCorp spokeswoman Ashley Burke said they had no current information on the state of the Baghlan-e-Jadid police force.

Baghlan province, where Afghanistan’s main north-south highway crosses the Hindu Kush mountain range, is critical in plans to develop a trade route between Central Asia and the Indian Ocean, and make the country a center for mining.

Taliban ‘Taxes’

Afghanistan has discussed with Beijing-based Metallurgical Corp. of China Ltd. building a railroad through Baghlan that would export copper ore from the Aynak mine south of Kabul, former Transport Minister Hamidullah Farooqi said in May.

After fighting almost entirely in the south for seven years, the Taliban since 2008 have moved north into Baghlan, levying “taxes,” killing government officials, and forcing cellular companies to shut networks at night to keep residents from reporting fighters’ movements to authorities.

The U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division, part of Obama’s strengthened force, this year began patrols in the province. American-led forces said May 29 that they killed the Taliban’s chief representative in the province in an air strike in Baghlan-e-Jadid.

The district’s police passed the U.S.-led training program in 2008 and became the first unit to win the top rating from mentors, meaning it was judged capable of basic operations with little or no support from U.S.-led forces, said a June 29 Defense Department auditor’s report. After the unit held that grade for nine months, advisers were withdrawn in June 2009.

Unstable Leadership

Baghlan’s police suffer unstable leadership because of power struggles among ethnic Pashtun and Tajik clans that have seen 10 provincial governors and numerous police chiefs appointed in nine years, said Fabrizio Foschini of the Afghanistan Analysts Network, a research group in Kabul. Clan- based militias defy government authority with roadblocks at which they extort money from travelers, merchants and nomads moving their herds, Foschini said.

Many police are corrupt and “take bribes from powerful families to settle disputes in their favor,” said Khwaja Mohammed Dawood, 43, a Pashtun tribal leader in Baghlan-e-Jadid. U.S. officials say they are fighting police corruption with a 38 percent pay increase last year and literacy training for officers.

“Bled again hosted top international policy makers, private sector leaders and experts in the field of geopolitics, such as former U.S. Secretary of State Colin L. Powell, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Belgium Yves Leterme, Secretary-General of the League of the Arab States Amer Moussa, Minister of National Defence of Canada Peter Gordon MacKay, Minister of State for External Affairs of the Republic of India Preneet Kaur, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federative Republic of Brazil Antonio de Aguiar Patriota, European Commissioner for the Environment Janez Potocnik, Chair of the Reflection Group Felipe González and Deputy Secretary-General of the OECD Richard A. Boucher….

A special panel addressed the “Regional security challenges and cooperation in Central Asia”. One of the panellists was also a representative of the OSCE chairing country, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Konstantin Zhigalov.”

BLED STRATEGIC FORUM 2010 – “Global Outlook for the Next Decade”

The rise of emerging powers, a globalizing economy and the growing influence of non-state actors is likely to make the international environment almost unrecognizable by 2020. Will the international system be up to the challenges that lie ahead? How can growing energy demands be met? How can access to sufficient clean water be guaranteed to everyone? How to re-connect the Western Balkans? What is the role of EU in the multipolar world?

Leaders and their ideas matter. These issues will be discussed at the Bled Strategic Forum, an annual gathering of leading decision-makers from private, public and academic spheres at Bled, Slovenia from 29 to 30 August 2010.

THE BLED STRATEGIC FORUM IN PREVIOUS YEARS
Last year’s Bled Strategic Forum, called “The Politics of Economic Crisis: Redefining Economic and Geopolitical Landscapes in Europe and Eurasia”, brought together numerous leaders, policy planners and representatives of civil society. The main topics of discussion were the politics of economic crisis and its influence on economic and political landscapes of Europe and Eurasia. It was a great pleasure to find out that the topic was highly accurate, provoking enough for lively discussion and useful for our further formation of policy approaches.

The previous Bled Strategic Forum was devoted to the nexus between energy and climate change. Under the title “Energy and Climate Change: Si.nergy for the Future” it brought together more than 400 high-level government representatives, politicians, EU officials, private sector leaders and senior representatives from think tanks and the non-governmental sector.

The 2007 Bled Strategic Forum was convened in August 2007, just a few months before the start of the first Slovenian EU presidency. A Conference titled “European Union 2020: Enlarging and Integrating” gathered a large number of participants from variegated backgrounds, including a number of high-level governmental representatives and private sector leaders. The Forum covered major challenges that the EU and global society face today, primarily focusing on the principal priorities of the Slovenian EU presidency.

The 2006 Bled Strategic Forum, called “Caspian Outlook 2008″, was focused on the geopolitical relevance of the Caspian region for the EU from economic, political and strategic perspectives.

Bled Strategic Forum is organized jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia and the Centre for European Perspective.

Lebanon files complaint to UN over alleged Israeli spy network

Lebanon files complaint to UN over alleged Israeli spy network

By The Associated Press (CP) – 1 hour ago

BEIRUT — Lebanon has filed a complaint to the United Nations accusing Israel of planting spy networks in the country.

Lebanon’s Foreign Ministry, which drew up the complaint, said Thursday the letter was sent overnight to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Over the past two years, Lebanese authorities have detained more than 100 people suspected of spying for Israel. Most of the suspects allegedly tried to infiltrate or get information on the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

About 50 people have been charged with spying for the Jewish state. In Israel, several people have been captured for allegedly giving information to Hezbollah.

Israeli and Hezbollah fought a 34-day war in 2006.

“The humans? The planet does not need humans.”–James Lee

“I hate people.”–Columbine shooters armband.

The Discovery Channel MUST broadcast to the world their commitment to save the planet and to do the following IMMEDIATELY:

1. The Discovery Channel and it’s affiliate channels MUST have daily television programs at prime time slots based on Daniel Quinn’s “My Ishmael” pages 207-212 where solutions to save the planet would be done in the same way as the Industrial Revolution was done, by people building on each other’s inventive ideas. Focus must be given on how people can live WITHOUT giving birth to more filthy human children since those new additions continue pollution and are pollution. A game show format contest would be in order. Perhaps also forums of leading scientists who understand and agree with the Malthus-Darwin science and the problem of human overpopulation. Do both. Do all until something WORKS and the natural world starts improving and human civilization building STOPS and is reversed! MAKE IT INTERESTING SO PEOPLE WATCH AND APPLY SOLUTIONS!!!!

2. All programs on Discovery Health-TLC must stop encouraging the birth of any more parasitic human infants and the false heroics behind those actions. In those programs’ places, programs encouraging human sterilization and infertility must be pushed. All former pro-birth programs must now push in the direction of stopping human birth, not encouraging it.

3. All programs promoting War and the technology behind those must cease. There is no sense in advertising weapons of mass-destruction anymore. Instead, talk about ways to disassemble civilization and concentrate the message in finding SOLUTIONS to solving global military mechanized conflict. Again, solutions solutions instead of just repeating the same old wars with newer weapons. Also, keep out the fraudulent peace movements. They are liars and fakes and had no real intention of ending the wars. ALL OF THEM ARE FAKE! On one hand, they claim they want the wars to end, on the other, they are demanding the human population increase. World War II had 2 Billion humans and after that war, the people decided that tripling the population would assure peace. WTF??? STUPIDITY! MORE HUMANS EQUALS MORE WAR!

4. Civilization must be exposed for the filth it is. That, and all its disgusting religious-cultural roots and greed. Broadcast this message until the pollution in the planet is reversed and the human population goes down! This is your obligation. If you think it isn’t, then get hell off the planet! Breathe Oil! It is the moral obligation of everyone living otherwise what good are they??

5. Immigration: Programs must be developed to find solutions to stopping ALL immigration pollution and the anchor baby filth that follows that. Find solutions to stopping it. Call for people in the world to develop solutions to stop it completely and permanently. Find solutions FOR these countries so they stop sending their breeding populations to the US and the world to seek jobs and therefore breed more unwanted pollution babies. FIND SOLUTIONS FOR THEM TO STOP THEIR HUMAN GROWTH AND THE EXPORTATION OF THAT DISGUSTING FILTH! (The first world is feeding the population growth of the Third World and those human families are going to where the food is! They must stop procreating new humans looking for nonexistant jobs!)

6. Find solutions for Global Warming, Automotive pollution, International Trade, factory pollution, and the whole blasted human economy. Find ways so that people don’t build more housing pollution which destroys the environment to make way for more human filth! Find solutions so that people stop breeding as well as stopping using Oil in order to REVERSE Global warming and the destruction of the planet!

7. Develop shows that mention the Malthusian sciences about how food production leads to the overpopulation of the Human race. Talk about Evolution. Talk about Malthus and Darwin until it sinks into the stupid people’s brains until they get it!!

8. Saving the Planet means saving what’s left of the non-human Wildlife by decreasing the Human population. That means stopping the human race from breeding any more disgusting human babies! You’re the media, you can reach enough people. It’s your resposibility because you reach so many minds!!!

9. Develop shows that will correct and dismantle the dangerous US world economy. Find solutions for their disasterous Ponzi-Casino economy before they take the world to another nuclear war.

10. Stop all shows glorifying human birthing on all your channels and on TLC. Stop Future Weapons shows or replace the dialogue condemning the people behind these developments so that the shows become exposes rather than advertisements of Arms sales and development!

11. You’re also going to find solutions for unemployment and housing. All these unemployed people makes me think the US is headed toward more war.

Humans are the most destructive, filthy, pollutive creatures around and are wrecking what’s left of the planet with their false morals and breeding culture.

For every human born, ACRES of wildlife forests must be turned into farmland in order to feed that new addition over the course of 60 to 100 YEARS of that new human’s lifespan! THIS IS AT THE EXPENSE OF THE FOREST CREATURES!!!! All human procreation and farming must cease!

It is the responsiblity of everyone to preserve the planet they live on by not breeding any more children who will continue their filthy practices. Children represent FUTURE catastrophic pollution whereas their parents are current pollution. NO MORE BABIES! Population growth is a real crisis. Even one child born in the US will use 30 to a thousand times more resources than a Third World child. It’s like a couple are having 30 babies even though it’s just one! If the US goes in this direction maybe other countries will too!

Also, war must be halted. Not because it’s morally wrong, but because of the catastrophic environmental damage modern weapons cause to other creatures. FIND SOLUTIONS JUST LIKE THE BOOK SAYS! Humans are supposed to be inventive. INVENT, DAMN YOU!!

The world needs TV shows that DEVELOP solutions to the problems that humans are causing, not stupify the people into destroying the world. Not encouraging them to breed more environmentally harmful humans.

Saving the environment and the remaning species diversity of the planet is now your mindset. Nothing is more important than saving them. The Lions, Tigers, Giraffes, Elephants, Froggies, Turtles, Apes, Raccoons, Beetles, Ants, Sharks, Bears, and, of course, the Squirrels.

The humans? The planet does not need humans.

You MUST KNOW the human population is behind all the pollution and problems in the world, and YET you encourage the exact opposite instead of discouraging human growth and procreation. Surely you MUST ALREADY KNOW this!

I want Discovery Communications to broadcast on their channels to the world their new program lineup and I want proof they are doing so. I want the new shows started by asking the public for inventive solution ideas to save the planet and the remaining wildlife on it.

These are the demands and sayings of Lee.

James Lee James Lee

Lee grew up on Maui where friends and classmates remember him as a sometimes quiet but kind person, and someone who always wanted his voice to be heard.

Pictured in the Lahainaluna yearbook, the class of 1985 graduate shows the same smile those who knew him growing up say he always put on no matter what.

“People always thought of him being a loner, and he did get picked on a lot but he also laughed a lot along with being picked on,”said Raynette Romo, who grew up on the same street with him and attended school from elementary through high school with him. “It wasn’t like you could bully him and he would go on the side and start crying “

“They called him rock head because they used to throw rocks at him when he would walk down Lahainaluna Road from high school,” a former classmate and coworker said.

“This is the fist time I’m hearing about him becoming, going to the dark side, say,” said former high school classmate Tonya Kuaana. “I can only recall him being really happy kind of guy, but you never know what’s going on underneath.”

A friend and former coworker says the deaths of his parents, especially his mother, seemed to trigger a change in lee’s demeanor.

“He went from being a full on religious person carrying his bible and stuff and preaching to everybody to completely flipped around and basically hating god because god didn’t save his mother,” he said.

Lee’s environmental push was apparent even decades ago as a high school student — when he decided to conserve water, here’s how Romo, his gym partner, described what lee did next.

“He decided to not wash his uniform for a whole week,” Romo said. “I mean, it was stinky stinky stinky. He made his point, you know, he made his point clearly to us. He said you know what, we’re going to have to start saving water.”

While many are surprised and shocked at lee’s actions at the Discovery Channel, some see from his past what he may have been thinking.

“James was always, when we were growing up, wanting to be heard,” Romo said. “And if he had to go to an extreme he probably would have gone to an extreme. He was going to save the earth, and if it was his way to do his last breath to save earth, this is what he did”

Profile of Homegrown Environmental Terrorist James J. Lee

[We have before us all the reason that Obama needs to crack-down on "homegrown terrorists."  Further research on the man behind the gun will almost assuredly lead to hidden handlers.  Look for any history of mental illness.  The treatment was probably the programming.]

“Lee faulted the Discovery Channel for shows as varied as “Future Weapons,” “It Takes a Thief” and “Planet Green.” Instead, he sought programming based on “My Ishmael,” a book by philosopher Daniel Quinn in which a telepathic gorilla instructs a 12—year—old girl on society’s failings…

[Apparently, the man had a very large sum of money to just throw around in the name of "saving the planet."]

“Lee’s mission against the Discovery Channel goes back at least a few years. In the February 2008 protest in which he was arrested, he threw fistfuls of cash in the air and paid homeless people to carry signs condemning the network. Police found his pockets stuffed with more than $20,000, according to court records…Lee in 2008 also held a related contest promising $200,000 worth of Hawaiian real estate for the best essay proposing a save—the—planet TV show.”

[The snapshot above is from the terrorist's website.  He refers you to this link as his source of inspiration: Ishmael.com. The following is taken from that site.  The picture is of the old environmentalist (with his wife) who wrote the inspirational novel about the telepathic gorilla prodigy.  [The following is from Wikipedia, concerning the messianic monkey APE. ]

Ishmael, can communicate telepathically. At first baffled by this, the man learns the story of how the gorilla came to be this way and he accepts Ishmael as his teacher. The novel continues from this point as a Socratic dialogue between Ishmael and his student as they hash out what Ishmael refers to as “how things came to be this way” for mankind.

Ishmael’s life, which began in the African wilderness, was spent mostly in a zoo and a menagerie, and since had been spent in the gazebo of a man that extricated him from physical captivity. He tells his student that it was at the menagerie that he learned about human language and culture and began to think about things that he never would have pondered in the wild. Subsequently, Ishmael tells his student that the subject for this learning experience will be captivity, primarily the captivity of man under a distorted civilizational system. The narrator has a vague notion that he is living in some sort of captivity and being lied to in some way but he can not explain his feelings.

Ishmael uses the example of Nazi Germany to show that men are either held captive with the mythology of being superior, or “an animal swept up in the stampede” of the captivity of those around them.

A note from the Quinns

Here it is at last–the updated version of Ishmael.org. It’s version number five in the history of the site. Brian Cordyack created the design several years ago at the request of our founding and former webmaster, Alan Thornhill, with approval and input by the Quinns. Our webmaster, Cathy McIntosh, has been working bit by bit at setting up the necessary changes for some time, but nothing ever goes the way you think it’s going to, so it’s taken longer than we expected to actually get all the pieces switched over and in working order. (We’re still revising and updating some material and trying to update some of the historical material and make it available in a sensible way.)

Thanks to Wendy and Serenity Haardt for the photo, and to those of you who’ve helped out by pinpointing things that needed fixing or were outdated. This site is so massive it’s been a pretty daunting task to go through it all–link by link and inch by inch. We think we’ve covered everything, but we know there are still going to be glitches. (In some places, for example, you may still find references to BookSense rather than IndieBound, but the links work just the same.) So we appreciate your patience as we continue to make corrections and additions.

We hope you’ll find the new site pleasing and easy to use. We like it a lot. And we want it to work for all of you, who’ve been so instrumental in keeping not only this website but the message of Ishmael and all the other Quinn books alive and spreading.

Our thanks and appreciation to all of you….

A Companion for Ishmael in the Classroom

  • Introduction

Ishmael, by Daniel Quinn, is the story of a desperate young man in search of a teacher. The teacher he finds is a lowland gorilla, who, being a member of a species entirely different from ours, has an entirely different vision of our history and our role in the universe. The book won the Turner Tomorrow Fellowship in 1991 for a work of fiction offering positive solutions to global problems. It was selected from more than 2500 entries from around the world by a panel of judges that included Nadine Gordimer and Ray Bradbury. Since its initial publication in English in 1992, it has been published in over a dozen languages.

The author was startled when he began getting letters from teachers telling him they were assigningIshmael to their classes. Even more surprising was the fact that they were not just teachers of literature, who might be expected to use a novel in class, but teachers of biology, anthropology, sociology, psychology, philosophy, history, and more. He heard from teachers in universities, in graduate schools, in high schools, and even middle schools. They told him how they were using Ishmael in their classes, but they also asked if he knew of other teachers with whom they might compare ideas and notes.

That’s why we put together The Ishmael Companion. The teachers who share their thoughts and classroom activities with you in the following pages are representative of the several hundred who have written the author over the past few years to share their classroom experience of using Ishmael. What we found, in collecting information for this guide is that Ishmael lends itself to diversity. The ways teachers use the book are as different and creative as the teachers themselves and the schools they teach in. We hope you’ll find their experience stimulating and useful in your own teaching.

A gunman shot to death by police after he took hostages at Discovery Channel headquarters said he hated the company’s television shows because he claimed they promoted population growth and environmental destruction.

Three hostages, two Discovery Communications employees and a security guard, escaped unhurt after the four—hour standoff on Wednesday in Silver Spring, just outside Washington. After several hours negotiating with the gunman, tactical officers moved in when authorities monitoring him on building security cameras saw him pull out a handgun and point it at a hostage, said Montgomery County Police Chief Thomas Manger.

A law enforcement official speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing identified James J. Lee as the suspect.

It wasn’t the first time Lee, a homeless former Californian, had targeted Discovery’s headquarters. In February 2008, he was charged with disorderly conduct for staging a “Save the Planet Protest.” In court and online, he had demanded an end to Discovery Communications LLC’s shows such as TLC’s “Kate Plus 8” and “19 Kids and Counting.”

Instead, he said, the network should air “programmes encouraging human sterilization and infertility.”

“Humans are the most destructive, filthy, pollutive creatures around and are wrecking what’s left of the planet with their false morals and breeding cultures,” Lee wrote in a bitter manifesto on his website.

Lee, 43, also objected to Discovery’s environmental programming. He wrote in 2008 that a show called “Planet Green” was “about more PRODUCTS to make MONEY, not actual solutions.”

Police say the gunman burst into the building about 1 p.m. and took hostages in the lobby on the first floor. A gun wasn’t his only weapon, as an explosive device on his body detonated when police shot him, Mr. Manger said. Police were trying to determine whether two boxes and two backpacks the gunman had also contained explosives and authorities sent in a robot to disarm a device on the gunman’s body.

NBC TV News reported that after its producers called Discovery’s phone number, a man identifying himself as James J. Lee got on and said he had a gun and several bombs.

“I have several bombs strapped to my body ready to go off. I have a device that if I drop it, if I drop it, it will … explode,” the man told NBC.

Police Capt. Paul Starks said the suspect had shot a gun at least once and that authorities believe he was acting alone but were investigating all possibilities.

Lee’s mission against the Discovery Channel goes back at least a few years. In the February 2008 protest in which he was arrested, he threw fistfuls of cash in the air and paid homeless people to carry signs condemning the network. Police found his pockets stuffed with more than $20,000, according to court records.

Lee served two weeks in jail after his arrest during which doctors evaluated his competency to stand trial. County State Attorney John McCarthy said Lee was ordered to stay 500 feet away from Discovery headquarters as part of his probation, which ended two weeks ago.

Lee faulted the Discovery Channel for shows as varied as “Future Weapons,” “It Takes a Thief” and “Planet Green.” Instead, he sought programming based on “My Ishmael,” a book by philosopher Daniel Quinn in which a telepathic gorilla instructs a 12—year—old girl on society’s failings. On his MySpace page, Lee said his heroes were Quinn and “Star Trek” commander James T. Kirk.

Mr.Quinn said in an interview from his Houston home that Lee misinterpreted his book’s message about the folly of continually increasing food production to meet population demands.

The author said he hadn’t heard of Lee before Wednesday but called his death “pretty horrible.” Had he been able to speak with him, he would have told Lee “he’s giving a bad name to the ideas that he’s trying to espouse.”

Lee in 2008 also held a related contest promising $200,000 worth of Hawaiian real estate for the best essay proposing a save—the—planet TV show.

The Maui News and KHON—TV reported that Lee had lived in the Lahaina area of West Maui. The newspaper reported that he was a 1985 graduate of Lahainaluna High School and his former classmates and principal described him as a normal person who didn’t cause any trouble.

“As far as I’m concerned, he was a good kid,” former Lahainaluna principal Henry Ariyoshi told The Maui News.

None of the 1,900 people who work in the Discovery Channel building were hurt on Wednesday.

“We’re relieved that it ended without any harm to our employees,” said David Leavy, Discovery’s executive vice president for corporate affairs.
