A small, US-registered plane crashed on Saturday in northern Colombia in a remote area near the Panamanian border, killing three Americans and a Panamanian official, authorities said.
BOGOTA: A small, US-registered plane crashed on Saturday in northern Colombia in a remote area near the Panamanian border, killing three Americans and a Panamanian official, authorities said.
A Colombian Air Force official told AFP the plane, which had six passengers on board, went down in the town of Acandi, in Choco department.
The two people who survived the crash were flown out of the remote, largely jungle region, by helicopter for medical care in Bogota, the official said.
Panama’s National Air Force said that one of those killed in the crash was Lieutenant Lloyd Nunez of Panama, adding that the other three dead and the two survivors were all Americans.
The plane was a US patrol aircraft involved in drug operations in the border area between Colombia and Panama, according to the Air Force.
Authorities were investigating the cause of the accident.
Antioquia department safety official Santiago Londono said authorities were working with their US authorities.
The US Embassy could not immediately confirm the dead were Americans.
Local press reports said five Americans and a Panamanian were on the plane.
