Taliban not a capable force despite show of power: Russian envoy

The Russian special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan Zamir Kabulov has said Taliban is not a capable force despite show of power.

During a meeting with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, Kabulov said that the government of Afghanistan is the only address for peace talks, insisting that Taliban has no option other than this address.

Kabulov further added that findings show Taliban group is facing various internal issues and are divided in different groups.

The remarks by Kabulov comes as the Quadrilateral Coordination Group (QCG), comprised of Afghanistan, Pakistan, China and United States, is busy to revive direct peace talks between the Afghan government and Taliban group.

The first round of direct talks is expected to take place in the first week of March with Pakistan already offering to host the meeting.

Meanwhile, Kabulov expressed concerns regarding the presence of the loyalists of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group in the region.

He said the Russian leadership, including President Vladimir Putin hails the Afghan government’s campaign to suppress the terror group in the country, specifically in eastern Afghanistan.

Kabulov also added that a delegation of the Russian officials will soon meet with the Ministry of Finance of Afghanistan to seek ways for joint economic cooperation between the two countries.

He said the Russian housing companies will continue to seek ways for better joint cooperation to invest in housing sector as per the earlier agreements reached with the Ministry of Urban Development of Afghanistan.
